A Journey out of horticulture and into illustration

Monday 18 August 2014

I have discovered the most fabulous illustrator/photoshop/drawing program...that I got free! Left is regular photoshop, right is new, free awesome program. My eyes are so blurry from using it so much I can barley see what I'm typing. Addicted! (This is part of a much larger design I plan on submitting  to a t-shirt design comp)

I do hope to have some more in depth posts at some point, but until I have some extra time, here are a few recent works.

Big exciting news!

I've been short listed for the kids book review illustrators award! I was bouncing around the house squealing like a 5 year old when I found out.
There are 18 others on the shortlist and I  know I haven't got a snowballs chance in hell of winning, (I've seen some of the other entrants work, they're amazing!) but I'm really not bothered at all. I wasn't expecting to get recognized in this competition let alone shortlisted. I'd actually forgotten about it for a while so you can imagine how shocked I was to read my name on the list.

I know it's not exactly signing a million dollar book deal, but it is a step closer and I am so grateful, shocked and thrilled!

So here is the picture that got me on the short list plus a few catch up images from the challenge. I'll check in again soon with some other arty updates.

Competition entry: Tug of war (One of my first and favorite scenes with my five, forest friends)

Illustration challenge - Week 24: Feast (I'll do a more detailed blog entry on this piece when I'm more awake)

Journal - Wednesday 4th June 2014

So, a bit of an update on the journey.  ...well nothing much to report really. I was thinking about getting a job in a book store, but it kind of fell thru. Besides I really don't think they could do without me at work. I'm the only one who works full time, the only one who answers the phone and does the paperwork and the orders just wouldn't get done with one, three day staker.

I am entering a publishers, illustrator scholarship thing this month. I know some of the illustrators I'll be up against and I know for certain I won't win. But at lest It'll be good practice.

I've also designed a wedding cake as an extra little side challenge of the illustration challenge which was a lot of fun. I hope they pick my design. I'd love to see my art in cake form.

Anyway, challenge is going well. I got another 2 of my pieces on the favourties blog today which takes the total to 14! (Michael's calling me a blog hog) I'm extremely flattered, but I still feel a little undeserving and..well..greedy.

One of the biggest challenges at the moment is fatigue. I'm just tired ALL the time. (except for 2am funnily enough...) I wake up late, get to work late, drag myself home and try not to fall asleep on the couch. Coz if I do I won't be getting up again for hours and then all my arty time has been snored away. I think I might have sleep apnea, which I would go to see the doctor about if I hadn't accidentally thrown out my referral ( Rolls eyes at self)

Anyway, you're not here to read about my boring sleep habits. Here, have some art.

Illustration challenge catch up

I think I'm the only one who actually sees this so I'm only putting the pictures up. Can't be bothered writing about it.

52 Week challenge update

Week 18: Celestial body. Water colour, pen and texta.
Inspired by one of my favourite nursery rhymes. Very happy with this one.

Week 18: Celestial body. "Moon Rabbit" Glitter paper, gel pen, pencil.
My new favourite song at the moment is 'moon rabbit'. It's been stuck on my head for days and it got me thinking "what would a moon rabbit look like?" That's when the light bulb came on and here we are. Glowing blue rabbits that live in craters (which are actually moon rabbit burrows) that have races around the earth (which we mistake for shooting stars)
Glitter paper isn't the easiest thing to photograph and it's 3D so it looks much more effective in person, but you get the gist.

Week 17: Horse - Pencil on craft board
I had so much trouble with this one. I couldn't get the colours right and I had to alter the original design because it wasn't working. I adjusted the levels a fair bit in photoshop because it wasn't scanning properly and I'm still not very happy with it. oh well, bring on next weeks theme.
